Kristin Bair is an award-winning musical theatre composer who uses music to tell stories about ordinary characters in extraordinary circumstances who learn they are stronger and braver than they ever imagined.

About me…

In 2006, I wrote a musical for my children’s elementary school.
It changed my life.

That show - Cats and Mice, the first musical I ever wrote, featuring the first SONGS I ever wrote - gave me the crazy confidence to apply to the BMI Musical Theatre Workshop in NYC. Delusional? For sure. But somehow…flash-forward a few years and there I am, in BMI’s Advanced Workshop, receiving the BMI Foundation’s Jerry Harrington Award for Outstanding Creativity. And the journey continues…

COMPOSING

My writing partner, lyricist/librettist Kevin Hammonds, and I wrote the superhero musical comedy adventure Up and Away, which premiered at Pittsburgh CLO in 2018, had its West Coast premiere at Broadway Rose Theatre Company in 2020, and is now under option for a regional tour (coming soon to a theatre near you!).

Our current project is Dear Shirley, a musical adaptation of acclaimed photographer Hinda Schuman’s memoir, most recently developed at Philadelphia Theatre Company during a NAMT-funded residency in 2020.

Kevin and I have been finalists for Theatre Latte Da’s Next Generation Grant and the Rhinebeck Writers Retreat, and we’ve been commissioned by Prospect Theater Company, URock Theatricals, and New York City Children’s Theatre.

With lyricist Sarah Ziegler Blair, I wrote Dustin Gavins P.I., a commission from the 4@15 Musicals Program and UC-Irvine in 2016.

My songs have also been featured at Feinstein’s 54 Below, The Duplex, New York Theatre Barn, and the BMI Smoker Series.
